Dagon University

Dagon University (Image:DagonTekkado.gif), located in Dagon North Township, Yangon, Burma was established in 1993. It is one of the largest universities in Burma (Myanmar).

History

In the early 1990s, Yangon city was developed with great extension of city area. Due to an increase in the number of university students in Yangon, the former Secretary-1 of the Myanmar Education Committee, Lt-General Khin Nyunt, planned to eatablished a further new university in the outskirt of Yangon. Named as Dagon University in 1993, it covered a large area of land approximately 1,600 acres In North Dagon Township.

By the time its establishment, it wrongly referred as an Oxford University of Myanmar although it looked like a small desert without any plants and with few buildings in the mushy land. However, its reputation grew rapidly by the late 90s due to the highest demand and subsidy by the government and local business enterprises. It, now, hosts more than 5, 000 students[citation needed] and with minium-level facilities and staff. The university has easy access from downtown Yangon via Thingangyun Township and accepts most students from Dagon, North Okkala, South Okkala, Tamwe, and Thingangyun Township, administratively called Eastern zone of Yangon.
